A group of American soldiers are still being held as prisoners of war in Vietnam, and Trautman wants Rambo to return to the killing fields on a daring rescue mission. In 'Rambo 3' (1988), Rambo has entered a Buddhist monastery in a bid to find inner peace. However, when his friend and mentor Colonel Trautman is captured in war-torn Afghanistan, Rambo sets out to save him. Finally, in 'Rambo' (2008), since helping the mujahedeen rid Afghanistan of the Russians, John Rambo has been living a quiet life in northern Thailand, trapping poisonous snakes to sell to local entertainers. But when a group of human rights missionaries pleads with him to ferry them upstream to Burma to re-supply the oppressed Karen tribe, Rambo reluctantly agrees. A few weeks later, however, word filters through that the missionaries have been taken hostage by the Burmese military, who are using them as pawns in their local war. He is rewarded by being sent to an 'open' prison to finish his sentence but, six months before his release, he is grabbed in the night, taken to a maximum security prison and reunited with his old enemy. Finally, in 'Cliffhanger' (1993), Gabe Walker (Stallone) is a mountain rescue worker haunted by memories of a friend he failed to rescue, and who perished on the ice peaks. Having quit his job and fled from the mountains, Gabe must return to the scene of his undoing to track down nefarious villain Qualen (John Lithgow), who is searching the snow for stolen money. On their road trip they hear blood-curdling cries and with their truck suddenly not running, they go to investigate and stumble upon a gruesome mass killing. But when one of their number is murdered by adversary Jean Vilain (Jean-Claude Van Damme), the team's quest for revenge finds them pitted against an unexpected rival. In 'The Expendables 3' (2014) Barney Ross (Stallone) comes face-to-face with old nemesis Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), with whom he originally formed the group of mercenaries known as the Expendables. However, when Stonebanks turned into a dangerous arms trader, Barney had no choice but to take him out and believed him to be dead - until now.
